HERITAGE HUT UPDATE AUGUST 2020
Despite the hiatus that COVID has caused, work recommenced on the internal finish of the hut and landscaping of the surrounding area six weeks ago. To keep with a beach feel the internal walls of the hut have been clad in horizontal planks and given a lime-wash style finish, we had some click-lock wooden floor kindly given to us which when laid completed the seaside effect we hoped for. Our builder, Toby Clayton, then turned his attention to the landscaping, he assembled some gabion baskets and filled them with pebbles banking them up on the sea side of the plot and making some outdoor seating on the lower ones, he also added more gabions to the side adjacent to the car park. An entrance way was formed and a bank of large pebbles were set into a concrete base to give it a tidier look as you approach on foot. The area directly in front of the hut contained by the gabions was levelled and an apron of slabs set in front of the building, a plastic grid was then laid and filled with fine gravel. The effect as I hope you can see in the photos is fantastic and really enhances this area. Still to be completed are the electrics, storage cupboard, a display area and some additional furnishings.
It was hoped that the Centre would be opened by now but due to the delays caused by the pandemic and the inability to hold any fundraising activities recently the opening will sadly now be delayed until 2021.
We have currently exhausted all our funds in getting the building to a position where it is almost ready to use, and we certainly would have been using had we been able to fundraise. As of now work can only be progressed as funds are made available, we are aiming for an official opening in spring 2021, and are currently seeking grant aid to do this. Work is still progressing on designing the displays in preparation for the great day when we can finally open our doors.
